While both Pip and Estella are shaped by other people and by circumstances in Great Expectations, and to an extent find comfort in this subservience, this control is far more encompassing for Estella. Estella is shaped emotionally so that another determines her very character and identity. Pip, however, is controlled mo re externally, and has more power to think independently and form his own character and central identity, allowing him a greater potential for moral redemption in the end of the novel.Estella is a person who has been turned completely into an instrument of revenge. Miss Havisham, in her attempt to assert control and strike back for the wrongs done to her, turns this desire to into a total control over a little girl, saying I adopted her to be loved. I bred her and educated her, to be loved. I developed her into what she is, that she might be loved. Love her! (240). In the world in which Estella was raised, even play and love, those basic shapers of character in young children, were orchestrated. Estella was shaped against love, Miss Havisham stole her heart away and put ice in its place (399), and love becomes something Estella cant understand. Miss Havisham seems surprised by the degree to which she has determined Estellas identity when she realizes that the woman she has c reated is incapable of love even towards her adopted mother.Estella exhibits this concept that her life is not her own consistently throughout the novel. The success is not mine, the failure is not mine, but the two together make me. (304-306). Later she explains to Pip how she cannot escape from this construction, telling him It is in my natureŠIt is in the nature formed within me. (362). Estella is made an unnatural person because of the influence of how she has been shaped.Pip is influenced by a long list of masters, including M rs. Joe, Estella, Joe, Jaggers, and Magwitch. With so many influences it is difficult to see to what extent he is controlling his own destiny. His earliest shaping came from his abuse from Mrs. Joe. This abuse led to feelings of self-loathing and criminality, and he does internalize this connection to crime. The humorous presentation of these incidents of abuse, however, emphasizes Pips autonomy beyond them. In the first pages of the novel we see Pip wandering the marshes, and can already see that he has more freedom through his gender than Estella, who remained trapped in Miss Havishams old house.Joe serves as a moral example for Pip. Joe respects and acknowledges his own nature, telling Pip Im wrong out of the forge, the kitchen, or off thmeshes. (224). Through example he encourages Pip to retain some independent identity. Joes influence on Pip can be clearly seen at the beginning in his compassion toward the convict. When Pip meets the convict, he describes himself as Pi tying his desolation (19), just as Joe later tells Magwitch We dont know what you have done, but we wouldnt have you starved to death for it, poor miserable fellow-creatur. (40). Joe through this is a gentle moral influence on Pip, versus an aggressive shaping influence, like his wife.Miss Havisham and Magwitch are aggressive influencing forces on Pips life. He is physically molded into what they want to see, and like Estella becomes an instrument of anothers desires. Miss Havisham desires a dancing playing boy, and makes him engage in those actions. She forces him into his coarse common (92) class identity. Magwitch wants a gentleman and so constructs him as one, saying If I aint a gentleman, nor yet aint got no learning, Im the owner of such' (321). Both of these, however, represent a physical identity change only.The most influential shaping of Pip occurs through Magwitch and, more specifically, the great expectations imparted on Pip by him. With these expectations, Pip ta kes on an identity of a gentleman as he sees it. In this identity he becomes increasingly concerned with appearances. Pip becomes like Herbert, who still rather confounded his intention with his execution. (176). Pip also, however, realizes the constraints of money, and comes to see how it is reducing his control over his own destiny, saying What I was chained to, and how heavily, became intelligible to me (331). Through money he is owned, as Estella is owned through affection and money. Estella is not treated with love, and so does not give love to others. Pip too is objectified and so begins to form all of his relationships in this way, treating Joe and Biddy as objects at his disposal. The main contrast between Pip and Estella in this respect is in Pips power to resist this ownership construction of social relations. All Pip has to do is detract himself from the money that binds him. He is less a helpless victim, and gladly enters into and remains within the collective f antasy of his gentleman identity.Jaggers, through his frequent assertations of separation from the lives he deals with and his regular hand washing to wash away his connection with what he does, imposes some influence on Pip, teaching him to avoid responsibility. As I had grown accustomed to my expectations, I had insensibly begun to notice their effect upon myselfŠ Their influence on my own characterŠ I knew very well that it was not all good. (272). In the social environment in which he lives, a person cannot be a blacksmith, scholar, and gentleman together, and so he struggles to form himself between these.Both Pip and Estella seem to find some comfort in their submission. In submission they are given the identity that they seek, and have a connection to others. Pip willingly ties himself to Jaggers and to his benefactor, though this is only a new form of servitude, and one that proves to be more encompassing than the servitude to class in which he was constrained at the forge. Even when he escapes from submission to his gentleman status, it is for a new, happy submission back at the forge, where he says contentedly of Joe I was to submit myself to all his orders. (464). He also eagerly puts himself in a subservient position to Estella, following her around to let her disdain and control him, describing The air of completeness and superiority with which she walked at my side, and the air of youthfulness and submission with which I walked at hers (237). Estella also seems to seek subservience. She forms her entire identity in submission to Miss Havisham, and is totally shaped by her servitude. However, instead of seeking to free herself, she binds herself in a subservient role to Drummle when she marries him. After being controlled their entire lives, both Pip and Estella find comfort in the familiarity of submission to the will of another.When, at the end of the novel, both Pip and Estella are relieved of the controlling influences upon them, Pip is more able than Estella to morally redeem himself because of the difference in how they have been shaped. Pip recovers his morality by reverting to his independent agency and self-created identity. But even though Miss Havisham is dead, Estella will forever be trapped in the mind she created. Financial control can be broken away from for moral redemption, but complete dependence and emotional control is binding beyond death. Pip had Joe to help counteract the negative shaping and to teach him how to form his own character, but for Estella the parent that she was utterly dependent on for love was the one that sought to control her. Pips moral redemption occurs when he returns to compassion, realizing that life is more than just class. Through this he earns the moral stature of a gentleman. It occurs when in the hunted wounded shackled creature who held my hand in his, I only saw a man who had meant to be my benefactor, and who had felt affectionatelyŠtowards me with great constancy throug h a series of years. I only saw in him a much better man than I had been to Joe. (446). Estellas moral corruption went far beyond just falling for the seductions of money. She gains some redemption in her final humbled scene, but she can never escape from who she was made into.Both Pip and Estella were shaped greatly in their identities in Great Expectatitons. Pip, however, was shaped in a way to allow for independent thought, while Estellas whole being was bound up in the will of others. The similarity of their orphans plight drew them together. Both found themselves trapped in a long chain of iron or gold (72), but one stark difference remained between them. Estellas shaping by Miss Havisham was so complete that she was incapable of love. Pip in the end asserts that he is an independent creature, while Estella remains the lady Miss Havisham constructed her into. Augustine was educated as a lecturer in the former North African cities of Tagaste, Madaura, and Carthage. The philosophical works of Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman speaker and politician, inspired Augustine to become a seeker after truth. Augustine engaged restlessly in philosophical studies, and passed from one phase of thought to another, unable to find satisfaction. From 373 until 382, in Carthage, he conformed to Manichaeism, a dualistic philosophy dealing with the conflict between good and evil. This seemed to be the answer to the confusion in his own heart. It solved the mysteries that confused him in his own experience. After realizing that this philosophy wouldnt make a great ethical system, he abandoned this philosophy. After being educated throughout North Africa, he left Carthage and in 384 found himself in Milan where he would pursue his career of a professor in rhetoric. Also, in Milan he met and was influenced by the bishop, Ambrose. With this, Augustine was attracted again to Christianity and was baptized by Ambrose in 387. Augustine was also influenced by Platonism. He than returned to North Africa where he became the bishop of Hippo in 391, a title he held until he died. This great Father of the Church, wrote a handbook on the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and love. The Enchiridion on Faith, Hope, and Love was written in the year 420. It is a brief handbook on the proper mode of serving God, through faith, hope, and love. It is easy to say what one ought to believe, what to hope for, and what to love. But to defend our doctrines against the slander of those who think differently is a more difficult and detailed task. If one is to have this wisdom, it is not enough just to put an enchiridion in the hand. It is also necessary that a great eagerness be in the heart. Saint Augustine says that God created all things good. In Chapter XI, Augustine says, what is called evil in the universe is but the absence of good (Augustine 177). He uses an example of disease and wounds, which are evil, are nothing but the absence of health, which is good. For when a cure is effected, that does not mean that the evils which were present go away from the body and dwell elsewhere: they altogether cease to exist (Augustine 177). In sum, when evil is controlled it will no longer exist in the good or anywhere else. Augustine relates this to the vices in our soul and how they are nothing but deprivations of natural good. Just like the disease and wounds, when the vices are cured, they cease to exist in the soul and everywhere else. What he is trying to say is that God didnt create evil for its own purpose. God is supremely good and wouldnt put evil on this earth if we werent able to get some good out of it. So evil is here for the purpose of good. Augustine discusses the idea of contraries in Chapter XIV. Augustine states that two contraries cannot be predicated at the same time of the same thing (Augustine 178) does not hold true with the concept of good and evil, even though they are contraries. He also says that good can exist without evil, but evil cannot exist without good, or in anything that is not good. For a man or an angel can exist without being wicked; but nothing can be wicked except a man or an angel: and so far as he is a man or an angel, he is good; so far as he is wicked, he is an evil (Augustine 178). He says that evil originates in what is good. He derives at this from saying, corruption could not have either a place to dwell in, or a source to spring from, if there were noting that could be corrupted; and nothing can be corrupted except what is good, for corruption is nothing else but the destruction of good (Augustine 178). We all know that lying is wrong and Augustine agrees with this, but in Chapter XVIII he feels the need to answer the question whether at any time it can become the duty of a good man to tell a lie? (Augustine 180). He understands that when one lies a sin is committed, but it makes a difference according to the intention and the subject at hand. Some people lie to help or deceive others. Augustine believes that the man who unintentionally says what is false, thinking it is true, is a better man than the one who unintentionally says what is true, but in his mind intends to deceive. For the former does not think one thing and say another; but the latter, though his statements may be true in fact, has one thought in his heart and another on his lips; and that is the very essence of lying (Augustine 181). Augustine leaves us with a thought at the end of this chapter, regarding the subject of the lie, that it is less evil to lie about matters that do not regard religion, than to be led into a lie about matters that have to do with the correct worship of God. He feels that the subject matter on which one deceived or is deceived is the most important. In Chapter XXII, Augustine states that when speech is used to deceive it is seen as a sin because man was given the gift of speech to make his thoughts known to others. He also brings up that point that people believe that sometimes it is ok to lie, if you are doing a service to another or helping them out in any way. Augustine believes that a lie, even to save someone from injury, is forbidden. He adds a quote from the new covenant, Let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil (Augustine 184). Augustine believes that in order to find happiness we must know the causes of good and evil, in order to avoid mistakes and troubles that we will encounter throughout life. I do not agree with Augustine when it comes to lying. I feel that everybody, one time or another, has lied to either protect themselves or to save another. I know that lying is terrible and we shouldnt partake in it, but I would be a hypocrite if I stood by Augustine on this subject matter because I have lied. I understand that Augustine is trying to explain to the readers that the road to God is a road clear of lying, and it is upsetting, but many do lie not thinking of the consequences. I also do not agree with Augustines idea of lying according to the intention and the subject. He believes that it is better to lie to somebody if it is off the subject of religion, other than to be deceived into error in regard to the subject of religion. I dont see lying better off than being deceived into an error of religion. It is not your fault when you are deceived, the other is at fault, but when you lie you are at fault, and only you. That is why I cant seem to agree with this idea. I agree with Augustine that evil is but the absence of good. I feel that God did make everything good, and it is the absence of good that causes evil. People choose the road they feel like taking throughout life. I think of it this way; God started us off on this world all consisting of good and it is we who choose to become evil. This follows through with Augustines next idea, which I also agree with, in that there can be no evil where there is no good. This holds true because everybody consists of good, and evil is the absence of good, so that just concludes that in order for evil there must be good. Augustine also says that good and evil can exist at the same time, but evil cannot exist without good, however, good can exist without evil. I feel that one can embody good and evil, there are many humans like that now. Its true that evil cannot exist without good because we are only evil when we arent good, but one can be good without being evil. I hope I have made it clear that there are some points that I agree with and there are some ideas of Augustine that I dont agree with. As for the way to serve God, I believe that as long as you live your life to the best of your ability, you will succeed.
